The Turtle
The turtle can't go out to play,
Or sell his house or rent it;
For when he moves,
His house moves too
And nothing can prevent it.
Dating back to ancient times, in many cultures turtles are considered a good luck symbol as well as a symbol of long life and good health.
In the creation myths of several cultures, the turtle or tortoise carries the world upon its back or supports the heavens.
In the Orient a turtle at the back door of a house or in the backyard by a pond is said to attract good fortune and many blessings.
To see turtles in ones dream implies an unusual incident that might cause enjoyment is likely soon. It also may suggest that your business conditions are going to improve.
Turtles are frequently depicted in popular culture as easygoing, patient, and wise creatures.
“The Tortoise and the Hare” is a well known fable attributed to Aesop. The story concerns a hare who one day ridiculed a slow-moving tortoise. In response, the tortoise challenged his swift mocker to a race. The hare soon left the tortoise far behind and, confident of winning, he decided to take a nap midway through the course. When he awoke, however, he found that his competitor, crawling slowly but steadily, had already won the race.
Over three thousand years ago in China the bottom shell of turtles was used to answer questions or forecast the future. The questions were inscribed on the shell, which were then heated until cracks appeared. Then the answer would be divined from the cracks. These bones were called “oracle bones”. These oracle bones are the earliest known body of ancient Chinese writing.
The Turtle is considered by some Indigenous North Americans to be one of their oldest, most sacred symbols. They believed that North America was created on the back of a turtle. To this day most indigenous peoples refer to North America as Turtle Island.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are comic book characters created in 1983. Their names are Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo.
